The elevated structure is sited in a cherry grove on the south shore of Long Island. The sixteen-sided volume is constructed from salvaged glass panels, charred oak posts, steel post-anchors, and salvaged decking. Each wedge-shaped post sits on top of a steel post anchor so that the structure floats 3’-0” above grade. The charring technique used naturally protects the wood from pests and rot without the use of a sealer. With an all-cedar interior, the studio serves an artist who hand builds clay sculptures. The flexible wall of shelving allows for shelves to be removed and used as work boards and to then be returned to the wall without having to handle a wet clay piece. The desk is complete with a built-in clay recycling system and is on casters to allow for flexible working layouts. The in-house renovation included the removal of a dropped ceiling to expose the original roof trusses, cleaning and waxing of a formerly oil stained concrete floor, new electric, and the addition of built-in millwork to serve as a book room. As the building was previously vacant for eight years, the purpose of the renovation of this large industrial space was to provide a gathering space and art exhibition space for all members of the Bellport community.
